Nadira Husain: Liquid Grids

About the exhibtion

Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen is pleased to present Liquid Grids, a solo exhibition by Nadira Husain, featuring an opulent mural in the museum’s display window along the façade. Spanning over fifteen metres and flanked by paintings and ceramic works, Husain’s wall painting blends motifs from Islamic art, European art history and Western pop culture. The artist’s rich symbolic vocabulary mirrors her roots in European and Indo-Islamic traditions.

By means of superimposition and the transfer of motifs, Husain’s work is an impressive demonstration of how art of the past and present is based on exchange, appropriation and transcultural interpenetration – an experience that represents a source of identity for many in today’s networked world. A pattern of stars provides the mural’s central compositional element. This is a reference to ornamental forms in Islamic art while geometric design likewise is central motif of abstract art, with numerous works in the Gelsenkirchen collection illustrating this.

Nadria Husain’s new installation is part of the ‘24-hour museum’ series and on view to the public around the clock from the outside.
