The work of the British artist and Turner Prize winner Martin Creed (born in 1968 in Wakefield, GB) is characterised by its radical simplicity and profound reflection on the principles of art. Inspired both by Minimalism as well as Conceptual art, his predominantly humorous approach animates us to view everyday objects and situations from a fresh perspective. Creed began numbering his works in 1987, further emphasising the serial character of his artistic practice.
Work No. 2592, Half the air in a given space consists of a room that is half-filled with balloons. The piece creates a dynamic and constantly changing environment. It throws a bridge between the moving artworks in the Kinetic collection and contemporary immersive art, which seeks to fully absorb viewers into the experience of art. From the colour spectrum specified by the artist, red balloons were chosen for his piece in Gelsenkirchen to provide an atmospheric and festive backdrop for the Kunstmuseum’s 40th anniversary.
