We are all preoccupied with money. How much do I have now? How much will I have left over? Why don’t I have enough? Money is nothing more than a material imbued with meaning, which can be exchanged for goods and services. The exhibition Hyle² is dedicated to this piece of material that gives us both good and bad dreams, and which we spend so much time thinking about.
Hyle in ancient Greek not only means wood but also denotes untreated raw material. The success story of the Ruhr region is closely linked to the extraction of coal as araw material. In this context, the exhibition Hyle² addresses the transition from traditional to new economic resources and the consequences of the depletion of material deposits.
The group exhibition features artworks by Malte Bartsch, FAMED, Russell Perkins, RELAX (chiarenza & hauser & co), Stirnimann-Stojanovic, and Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, which engage with the economic and social structures the present world.
Hyle² is curated by Kristina Grigorjeva and Undine Rietz, curators of Residence NRW⁺ 2024|2025. Hyle² is a collaboration between the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen and Residence NRW⁺.
